Central MD FCA wants to congratulate Rob Smoot, one of our coaches involved in our FCA Coaches Ministry, for being inducted into the Maryland Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame this past October.
Coach Smoot was a standout wrestler in high school at McDonogh School. He then went on to become a 4 year starter at Duke University and team captain. After finishing college, Coach Smoot returned back to McDonogh and was the head coach of the wrestling team from 1984-1993. Since then he has worked with the middle school, helped head up the JV team, and also assisted with the Varsity team at McDonogh School. With Coach Smoot there, McDonogh School has won the MIAA championship for 4 years and the private school states.
But Coach Smoot is not only making a difference on the mat but off the mat as well in helping build God's Kingdom. Coach has had an active role in our Central MD Coaches Ministry by participating in FCA's Coaches' Studies. He said this recently, "In terms of Jesus, I've always known that He won the biggest "match" by taking our sins upon Himself on the cross. Winning or losing a wrestling match doesn't really compare to what Christ did for us, so this knowledge has always helped me keep sports in perspective." He is a coach trying to help young men not only learn about what it takes to be a champion on the mat in wrestling but about the character and strength it takes to go through the journey of life.
